Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Marinade

  • 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced into strips
  • 2 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional, for spice)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Vegetables and Herbs

  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, whole
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 medium cucumber, julienned
  • 1 small carrot, julienned
  • 1 small red bell pepper, thinly sliced

Other

  • 12 rice paper wrappers
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, combine fish sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, minced garlic, and red chili flakes if using. Add the thinly sliced flank steak and toss well to coat all pieces evenly. Let the beef marinate for 10-15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  2. Cook the Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef strips and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and cooked through. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  3. Prepare the Rice Paper: Fill a shallow dish with warm water. Dip one rice paper wrapper into the water for about 5-10 seconds until it softens but is still slightly firm. Lay the softened rice paper flat on a clean surface for assembling.
  4. Add the Fillings: Place a few whole basil leaves and cilantro leaves in the center of the rice paper. Add a few strips of julienned cucumber, carrot, and red bell pepper on top of the herbs. Then add a portion of the cooked beef strips over the vegetables.
  5. Roll the Wraps: Fold the sides of the rice paper gently over the filling, then roll it tightly upward from the bottom edge to fully enclose the ingredients inside. Repeat the process with remaining rice papers and filling.
  6. Serve the Rolls: Arrange the Thai Basil Beef Rolls on a serving platter. Serve with a dipping sauce of lime juice, fish sauce, and a bit of sugar or your preferred dipping sauce for added flavor.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute beef with tofu or mushrooms.
  • Rice paper wrappers soften quickly; do not soak for too long or they become too fragile.
  • Serve immediately after assembling to enjoy the fresh texture and flavors.
  • Adjust chili flakes according to your preferred heat level.
  • Leftover cooked beef can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days but assemble rolls fresh.
