Texan BBQ Candied Nuts are a sweet and smoky snack featuring mixed nuts coated in a spiced sugar and egg white mixture, then baked to a crunchy perfection. This delicious treat combines the rich flavors of BBQ spices with the natural nuttiness of toasted mixed nuts, perfect for snacking or adding a flavorful crunch to salads and desserts.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Nuts

  • 2 cups mixed nuts (such as pecans, almonds, cashews, and walnuts)

For the Coating

  • 1 large egg white
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Nuts: In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg white until frothy. Add the mixed nuts and toss them well to coat evenly with the egg white.
  3. Mix Spice Coating: In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Sprinkle this spice and sugar mixture over the coated nuts and toss thoroughly to ensure the nuts are evenly coated with the spiced sugar mixture.
  4. Arrange and Bake: Spread the coated nuts in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring halfway through to promote even baking and prevent burning.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the nuts from the oven when they become crunchy and aromatic. Let them cool completely on the baking sheet; they will harden further as they cool. Once cooled, break apart any clusters and serve or store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • You can substitute mixed nuts with your preferred single type of nut like just pecans or almonds.
  • Adjust the level of spiciness by varying the amount of chili powder and smoked paprika.
  • Ensure nuts are spaced well on the baking sheet to allow for even cooking and crispiness.
  • Store cooled nuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
  • For a nut-free version, try seeds such as pepitas or sunflower seeds with the same coating.
