Onion Rings
- 2 large onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings
Batter and Coating
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
For Frying
- Vegetable oil, enough for deep frying
- Heat Oil: Begin by heating vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to 350°F (175°C). Make sure there is enough oil to fully submerge the onion rings for even frying.
- Prepare Flour Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix these ingredients well to create a seasoned flour coating.
- Prepare Buttermilk: Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl to use for dipping the onion rings.
- First Dip: Dip each onion ring into the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off to avoid soggy batter.
- First Coat: Coat the dipped onion ring in the seasoned flour mixture, shaking off any excess flour.
- Second Dip and Coating: Return the floured onion ring to the buttermilk, then dredge it in the panko breadcrumbs. Press gently to ensure the breadcrumbs stick well and form a crispy crust.
- Fry Onion Rings: Carefully place the coated onion rings into the preheated oil, frying a few at a time to avoid overcrowding the pot. Fry for 2-3 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy.
- Drain Oil: Remove the fried onion rings with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain off excess oil.
- Serve: Serve the onion ring chips warm with your favorite dipping sauce for a delicious snack or side dish.
Notes
- Ensure the oil temperature stays at around 350°F for perfectly crispy rings; too low and they absorb oil, too high and they burn.
- For extra flavor, add cayenne pepper or chili powder to the flour mixture.
- You can use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs for a gluten-free version.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the oven to maintain crispness.
