Classic Jam Drops, also known as Thumbprint Cookies, are delightful buttery treats filled with your favorite fruit jam. Crisp on the edges and soft in the center, these cookies offer a perfect balance of sweetness and texture, making them an ideal choice for tea time or festive gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup (135g) granulated sugar
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour

For the Filling

  • 1/2 cup (160g) fruit jam (such as raspberry, strawberry, or apricot)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, typically about 3-5 minutes using an electric mixer. Gradually add the all-purpose flour and mix until just combined, forming a soft dough.
  2. Shape the Cookies: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  3. Create Indentations: Using your thumb or the back of a small spoon, press gently into the center of each dough ball to create a small well without breaking the dough.
  4. Fill with Jam: Spoon about 1/2 teaspoon of your chosen fruit jam into each indentation, filling the thumbprint while keeping the jam level with the dough.
  5. Bake the Cookies: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges start to turn a light golden brown. The cookies should remain pale but set.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the cookies to cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy once cooled.

Notes

  • You can use any type of fruit jam or preserves according to your preference.
  • For a slight crunch, you may sprinkle a pinch of sugar on top of each jam-filled center before baking.
  • Make sure the butter is softened, not melted, for the best dough texture.
  • Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • These cookies can be frozen before or after baking for longer storage.
