Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Blue food coloring (gel recommended for vibrancy)

Cinnamon Filling

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup softened butter

Blue Frosting

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Blue food coloring (gel recommended)

Topping

  • Crushed chocolate chip cookies
  • Mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine the warm milk, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare the dough: Add melted butter, the egg, salt, and blue food coloring to the yeast mixture. Gradually stir in the flour until a soft dough forms that is slightly sticky but manageable.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic, which helps develop gluten for a fluffy texture.
  4. First rise: Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Roll the dough: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick on a lightly floured surface.
  6. Add filling: Spread softened butter evenly over the rolled dough. Sprinkle the brown sugar and ground cinnamon mixture generously across the buttered surface.
  7. Roll and cut: Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Cut the roll into 9 to 12 equal slices, depending on desired size.
  8. Second rise: Arrange the rolls in a greased baking dish with some space between each. Cover and let them rise for 30 minutes until puffy.
  9. Bake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the cinnamon rolls for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown on top and cooked through.
  10. Prepare frosting: Using a mixer or whisk, beat the softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and blue food coloring until smooth and creamy.
  11. Decorate: Spread the vibrant blue frosting over the warm rolls. Sprinkle crushed chocolate chip cookies and mini chocolate chips on top for texture and added flavor.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for a brighter, more vibrant blue color that doesn’t dilute the dough or frosting.
  • Do not overheat the milk or it may kill the yeast, which will prevent the dough from rising properly.
  • Allow the rolls to cool slightly before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting too much.
  • For the iconic Cookie Monster look, add crushed chocolate chip cookies on top after frosting.
