Ingredients

Scale

Cookie Cups

  • 1 (15.25 ounce) box Devil’s Food cake mix
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
  • black food coloring (optional)

Buttercream Filling

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 13 tablespoons milk
  • green food coloring

Decorations

  • Round green sprinkles
  • Halloween sprinkles
  • Candy eyeballs
  • Pretzel sticks

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pans: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease three 12-count mini muffin pans to prevent the cookie cups from sticking.
  2. Mix cookie dough: In a large bowl, combine the Devil’s Food cake mix, eggs, canola or vegetable oil, and black food coloring (if using) until the batter is smooth and well mixed.
  3. Scoop dough into pans: Using about 1/2 tablespoon of dough for each, drop onto the mini muffin pans and flatten each dough ball slightly with your fingers.
  4. Bake cookie cups: Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are set. Remove from the oven and immediately press an indentation into each warm cookie with the back of a 1 tablespoon measuring spoon. Allow to cool completely in the pans.
  5. Make buttercream frosting: In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt, beating until smooth. Slowly add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting is smooth and pipeable. Add green food coloring and mix until you achieve the desired shade of green.
  6. Fill cookie cups: Pipe the green buttercream into the cooled cookie cups, filling each to resemble a bubbling potion.
  7. Decorate: Garnish with round green sprinkles, candy eyeballs, Halloween-themed sprinkles, and break pretzel sticks in half to insert as stir sticks in each cookie cup.
  8. Serve and enjoy: Present your spooky Cauldron Cookie Cups immediately and enjoy the festive treats with friends and family.

Notes

  • If you prefer a less sweet filling, reduce the amount of powdered sugar in the buttercream.
  • For a more intense green color, add food coloring gradually until the desired hue is reached.
  • To make vegan or dairy-free versions, substitute butter with a plant-based spread and use egg replacers.
  • Ensure the cookie cups are completely cooled before piping the frosting to prevent melting.
  • Store leftover cookie cups in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
