Ingredients

Scale

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Dip Base

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Serving

  • Bread or crackers for serving

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 25 to 30 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
  2. Prepare the Dip Base: In a medium bowl, blend the softened cream cheese, shredded Gruyère cheese, mayonnaise, thyme, salt, and pepper together until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  3. Combine Onions and Dip: Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the cheese mixture carefully until evenly distributed.
  4. Serve: Transfer the dip into a serving bowl and present it alongside bread or crackers for dipping.

Notes

  • Use low and slow heat to properly caramelize onions without burning.
  • Let the onions cool completely before mixing to maintain the dip’s texture.
  • Gruyère can be substituted with Emmental or another Swiss cheese if unavailable.
  • For a lighter version, substitute mayonnaise with Greek yogurt.
  • This dip can be prepared ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days.
