4.9 from 68 reviews

Delicious baked ham and cheese rolls made with pizza dough, layered with ham and Swiss or Provolone cheese, then baked to golden perfection and topped with a sweet and tangy honey mustard poppy seed glaze. Perfect as a savory appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Rolls

  • 1 pound pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 8 large slices ham
  • 8 slices Swiss or Provolone cheese

For the Honey Mustard Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: Remove the pizza dough from the refrigerator 20 minutes before starting to allow it to come to room temperature, making it easier to roll out and shape.
  2. Preheat the oven: Set the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) to prepare for baking the rolls.
  3. Prepare the baking dish: Spray an 8 x 8-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  4. Roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the pizza dough into a rectangle roughly 16 inches by 8 inches, using the baking dish size as a guide.
  5. Add the fillings: Layer the sliced ham evenly over the dough rectangle, then place the slices of Swiss or Provolone cheese on top, making sure none of the slices overlap.
  6. Form the rolls: Starting with the edge closest to you, carefully roll the dough up into a log so that the ham and cheese are inside. Use a serrated knife to cut the log into 9 even slices. Arrange the roll pieces cut-side down in the prepared baking dish.
  7. Bake the rolls: Bake the rolls uncovered in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until cooked through and lightly golden on top. To check, peel back one layer with a knife and make sure the center is not doughy.
  8. Make the glaze: Melt the unsalted butter in the microwave or on the stovetop. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, honey, and poppy seeds until well combined.
  9. Glaze the rolls: Brush the honey mustard glaze evenly over the top of the baked rolls.
  10. Finish baking: Return the glazed rolls to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes or until they are a deep golden brown.
  11. Serve: Let the rolls cool slightly, then serve warm or at room temperature for best flavor.

Notes

  • Allowing the dough to come to room temperature before rolling helps prevent tearing and makes shaping easier.
  • Use a serrated knife to cut the rolls to maintain their shape without squashing.
  • Feel free to swap Swiss or Provolone cheese for your favorite melting cheese varieties.
  • Make sure to check the center of the rolls for doneness to avoid undercooked dough.
  • These rolls can be served as an appetizer, snack, or even a light meal.
